Description
It's always about the light. Islands have a special quality that other places just don't have. Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea, separated from Turkey by the mile-wide Mycale Strait. It was the birthplace of mathematician Pythagoras and philosopher Epicurus, and is known for producing sweet Muscat wine. In short, it is Ancient with a capital A. I am not a mathematican nor do I like sweet wine, but I sure like hanging out on islands. I almost painted this one completely over at one point. Instead I added a few extra boats, changed a few compositional features and it popped right in.

Wonderful artwork as always. I am immediately attracted to the blue and lovely houses. The sunlight making the houses on the right pop out. I want to be there right now for sure!

Hello again R/W Bob! In response to this new painting , first I have to jump right in without thought and say I have instantly fallen in love with the brilliant blues and oranges and exhilarating feeling of Samos which speaks to my heart in an instant. Then I wanted to find out more and was fascinated to read that you almost painted this beauty over but instead made a few tiny changes! Oh I'm SO glad not only that you DID that, but that you shared your process! I so often remove my paintings from here ( get fed up with them) and then add them again with a few more details after closely observing them in a new way. It's so often those surprising tiny details that sink or swim a work! Delightfully those details often only take a few minutes to change! I'm so entranced by this new and beautiful painting of yours. The boats, the colors, the light. All awesome! L/F

I very much appreciate your kind words and your insight on your artwork development. I remember Leonardo's comment that no artwork is ever complete, just abandoned. Sometimes that extra time and effort pays off for each of us. Thank you for your visit Jane!

Marvelous painting of Samos, Bob. Your blue tones are out of this world. And you are so right, islands have something special. f,l
