Cilician Pyrates of 100 BC
Artist
R W Goetting
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
According to Daniel DeFoe, author of "A history of the Pyrates" written in the 1700's, the Cilician pyrates commanded as many as "1000 sail". These rogues nearly caused a famine in ancient Rome, pirating so many grain ships from Sicily to Rome. At one point, they flew royal purple sails, had the sterns of the ships plated with gold and their oars plated with silver. Pompey had to raise a huge navy to combat them, and after great effort, finally rid the world of the largest pirate fleet in history.

Wherever this is - I wish I was there! Even if there are pyrates :) Having this on the wall for a mental escape would be even better I'm sure- since I could go there any time. Beautiful work. LF

Thank you so much Bonnie! Cilicia is an ancient city in south eastern modern day Turkey. It was fun to paint, mostly from imagination.

Amazingly beautiful painting, Bob. Love it so much. I am fascinated by the most distant hill that comes into the sea. Your warm and cool tones gradated variation from forward to distant is splendid. Didn't know that the author of Robinson Crusoe wrote also "A history of pyrates ". Good to know. I am very fond of Robinson Crusoe as it was the first book I read in my life at 8 years old. :) Great to learn from you about Cilician Pyrates fleet. Fascinating subject, masterfully painted. Fl
R W Goetting replied:
You are always so generous, thank you Ana. Reading Robinson Crusoe at such a young age may have set you up as an adventurer!
