Description
I discovered what a barco rabelo was while looking through an old book on wine. It seems that the Portuguese used these flat bottom boats to transport their huge barrels of port wine down the Duoro river. "Rabelo" means "little tail" referring to the long rudder at the back of the boat used for steering. Port in it's many forms is a fortified wine. During times of conflict with France, England turned to Portugal to supply it's wine needs. The wine from Portugal was fragile and did not hold up well during shipment. They somehow figured out that fortifying it with brandy solved the problem.
These boats aren't in use anymore but they sure are cool.

I love the mystery mood you instilled into this wonderful work Bob...this is what it evokes me...maybe due to the ancient waterfront so marvelously rendered, or maybe the light, or that old unique boat you beautifully described.. A truly splendid work! LF :)

I'm so fascinated by your paint applications R/W Bob. It gives the most beautiful crinkly effect to this wonderful work, ancient but timeless. Words are never quite sufficient to describe your atmospheres. I love the billowing white sail against the siennas and ochres and I love the unhurried pace of life you have depicted here. Even better if I could be sipping a glass of that fortified wine while viewing, but I can't have everything!! So brilliantly done. L/F

I just love this work, Bob. I think I saw it first few days ago on fb. Gorgeous textures on the buildings. I just love the upper two zones of sky and the fact you painted the beautiful boat's canvas as it would be another piece of sky. Great story of the rabelo boat and what a wonderful painting it inspired you ! f,l
