Description
In 1814, the British Navy sailed into the Patapsco River, intending to invade Baltimore. They were fresh off their defeat of Napolean and the French, and brought five "Bomb ships" with them to ensure victory. These ships were capable of hurling 200 pound, 18" diameter cast iron bombs two miles to destroy a target. Fort McHenry protected the city of Baltimore and was assualted by these bombs for 10 hours, but the fort was defended successfully by the Americans. The American Flag that was flown over the fort became known as the Star Spangled Banner and was made famous by a poem written by Francis Scott Key. The poem was set to music and officially became the National Anthem in 1931.
