Description
The flag that flew over fort McHenry during the British attack in September of 1814 is said to have taken quite a few direct hits from shrapnel but never fell. It had 15 stripes and 15 stars, one of each for the colonies. Francis Scott Key used a spyglass to see it from a ship stationed more than a mile away. It was still flying and inspired the American National Anthem which was designated as such in 1931.
