Description
Gondolas travel about three miles an hour (same as walking) and take the same energy to row as it does to walk. They're always painted black (six coats) — the result of a 17th-century law a doge enacted to eliminate competition between nobles for the fanciest rig. But each has unique upholstery, trim, and detailing, such as the squiggly-shaped, carved-wood oarlock (fórcula) and metal "hood ornament" (ferro). The six horizontal lines and curved top of the ferro represent Venice's six sestieri (districts) and the doge's funny cap. Even when they are idle, they always seem to be like a horse chomping at the bit to get going.

Always one of my favorites Bob...I feel the boats bobbing and the little choppy waves in motion. the colors here are beautiful, the pinks, the deep dark greens, the dynamic balance going on. l/f

This is such a beautiful creation, Bob. I already was nostalgic of Venice these days. :) Now even more seeing your splendid painting. That orange hue is so wonderful... As always you managed to perfectly depict the light and color mood of the place. LF&Pin
